Healthy Parks Healthy People || 5 Ways to WINTER wellbeing in nature!

Ashleigh Coombs - Friday, June 08, 2018

Dear All,

Thank you for your support with the launch of the Healthy Parks Healthy People 5 Ways to Wellbeing in Nature campaign late last year, and/or your interest in this work.

As you will recall, the aim of the campaign was to provide all South Australians with simple tools and opportunities to maintain good mental health and wellbeing, and to promote nature as an ideal setting for achieving these.

This campaign raised high awareness with 9,296 visits to the SA Health website and the videos were displayed in Facebook newsfeeds 1,593,914 times. The Facebook videos were also shared a total of 881 times and all received at least 75% positive sentiment.

Due to the success of the campaign, a second burst of activity is running throughout June 2018, to promote the 5 Ways to WINTER Wellbeing in Nature.

During winter months, people often stay indoors more and this can impact on their mental health and wellbeing. This burst of activity will promote winter themed nature based activities. In South Australia there are many parks and nature events that are best experienced in winter. The messaging will also remind people that winter is a time of the year when it is particularly important to think about ways to protect mental health and wellbeing as colder weather and less daylight hours can have a negative impact on mood for many people.

We need your help to spread these messages far and wide. If your organisation is keen to post some materials you can still access them online here.

We have also attached a newsletter article about the campaign that could be adapted for your stakeholders and audiences. The Good Living Blog will publish a new article to promote the campaign as well. Please like and share and keep your eye out for our SA Health posts throughout winter and if you would like to know more specific details about the posts, we can share the schedule with you.

Please don’t hesitate to get in touch with us if you have any further questions about how you could use these materials.

Kind regards,

The Healthy Parks Healthy People Project Team

Heritage SnAps photo competition

Ashleigh Coombs - Monday, May 07, 2018

You may be aware of the “Heritage SnAps” photo competition.

This Heritage South Australia “Heritage SnAps” photo competition is open to everyone to enter (with the exception of Heritage South Australia staff and their immediate family).

You, your families and friends are eligible to enter for a chance of winning fantastic prizes in each listed photo category including the Main Prize and a People’s Choice Award !

Furthermore to make the entry even easier, we have removed the requirement to write 100 words or less about each image uploaded.

Therefore we encourage you to get your modern, old or ancient cameras out, and take many interesting, inspirational, professional or totally amateur snap shots of our proud SA heritage, submit on-line and Win, Win, Win !!!

But remember the photos you submit must be your own, not copied or reproduced from any other sources.

There are a number of different categories you can enter.

Category 8 is for Professional / Edited photographers - staff members with the skills are allowed to enhance their images to make them stand out.

We have very creative nature photographers here at DEW (Floor 7 TV display in the staff kitchen area is perhaps the best example), but please do not assume that we are just after high definition and professional images. We accept all photos, colour, black and white and sepia, amateur and professional in numerous categories, including sports and young talent.

Winners will be announced during an Awards Ceremony in August this year following displays of the best SA heritage photo entries and finalists (as selected by an independent panel of judges) in the main foyer of the Adelaide Convention Centre throughout November 2018

Best of luck to you all – the competition is open now and will conclude on Friday July 13th.

Aldinga Washpool & Blue Lagoon revegetation plan

Ashleigh Coombs - Friday, May 04, 2018

A draft revegetation plan for Aldinga Washpool & Blue Lagoon and surrounding areas has been developed. The plan has been informed by detailed botanical and ecological assessments that provided up-to-date data on vegetation types and locations of significant species in the area.

The proposed planting site consists of several land parcels owned by a number of state and local government bodies and historically has been used for many purposes. The aim of the draft plan is to guide pest plant control and revegetation works that will restore and maintain the health of the site.

The proposed revegetation aims to reflect the natural open character of the coastal wetland, including low sedge and saltmarsh plantings, tussock grasslands, dune and coastal heathland and shrubland. Some open woodland tree plantings similar to the adjacent Aldinga Scrub Conservation Park are also proposed. You can view the draft revegetation plan by opening the attachment or by typing this address into your internet browser

We are seeking local community feedback on the plan and would like to hear from you.

Please join us at a community meeting where you can ask questions and submit your feedback in person.

WHEN: Tuesday 29 May 7–8 pm

WHERE: Sellicks Beach Community Hall, William Eatts Reserve Riviera Road, Sellicks Beach.

Bushcare's Major Day Out

Ashleigh Coombs - Saturday, February 17, 2018

Bushcare's Major Day Out (BMDO) will be held on Sunday September 16 2018

The date for BMDO 2018 is confirmed, and now's the time to start planning your activities and attracting volunteers to care for your local urban and regional bushland sites.

We want to hear from you!

Just like BMDO wouldn’t happen without you, your feedback is invaluable - it allows BMDO to gain more publicity and support year after year.

We have set up a short survey for you to provide us with your feedback on BMDO 2017, and any suggestions you have for this year.

Please take a few minutes to fill out the survey - thank you!

And we would love to hear about your events last year.

You can tell us about your BMDO events and achievements on our Feedback Form, available to download at the link:

We’re seeking sponsorship to fund a national promotions campaign for Bushcare’s Major Day Out 2018, to tell the whole country how great BMDO is!

In 2017 Bushcare’s Major Day Out merged with Conservation Volunteers. By combining Bushcare’s leagues of dedicated volunteers with our network of 20 offices and over 200 staff, we are mobilising communities to roll up their sleeves and take part in caring for their local, urban and regional bushland, wetlands and parks.

FoP Inc Role Descriptions

Ashleigh Coombs - Friday, February 16, 2018

Dear Friends

The Friends of Parks Board has now endorsed ‘role descriptions’ for Board members.

You may well ask ‘Why is this needed at all’ ? as Friends of Parks is a volunteer organisation.

The role of the Board has evolved since the organisation first became an incorporated body, with a constitution and board of management back in 1993. In those early days it was more an informal body that oversaw the grant governance arrangements commensurate with the new constitution.

Fast forward to 2018 and there is a very different operating environment in place. The environmental sector is much more complicated and diverse with lots of competing demands - the market place is more competitive, social/political and economic changes are happening faster and more consistently, legislation and governance requirements continue to evolve.

To ensure that the Friends of Parks organisation maintains its place as one of the peak volunteer organisation in South Australia, providing practical hands on support in parks, the Board has also needed to evolve and adapt to the changing circumstances.

To meet these changes, and in so doing provide more consistent support to member groups, it has developed a business plan consisting of five (5) separate sub-programs, with Board members taking a more primary role in driving business outcomes for the organisation as a whole. As a result the skill requirements needed by Board members has also changed. Board members need to be experienced and savvy in a number of areas, and this is expressed in the role descriptions for Board members – it is just one example of how much things have changed.

So, if you feel that you have something to contribute to the Board, please nominate to be a Committee member for the 2018 AGM.

Looking forward to seeing you at the AGM, to be held on Monday, 30 April 2018, at 9.30 am, at the Morialta Natural Resource Centre.
