Friends of Butcher Gap

Friends of Butcher Gap Conservation Park.

Our group has been in operation for 30 years.

We were the first group to be formed outside of the metropolitan area.

We organised the first country forum in 1987.

We help with maintaining Butcher Gap park, Mount Scott park, Bernoulli park and Kungarie park.

Butcher Gap is a coastal site mainly preserved for habitat for Orange Bellied Parrot but is now preserved as a wetland birds sanctuary. There is a well maintained walking trail which appeals to bird enthusiasts.

Mount Scott is situated on the edge of the old Reedy creek water course and is an important site for Mallee fowl studies. As well as this it is a very good site for Native flower and bird photography.

Bernoulli is another coastal park near Cape Jaffa . It contains the remains of the old light house keeper’s cottages. From this site one can see the remains of the Margaret Brock light house platform and contemplate how far these hardy families had to row to service the light house. The light has been re-erected on the present Marine parade in Kingston. This park is also part of the OBP preservation habitat.

Kungarie is a wetland reserve put aside to preserve the flora of South East . We are still developing trails and interpretive signs to highlight its flora and fauna.

Our group meets once a month for working bee and social gatherings.
